Dr. Jay Stewart is an ophthalmologist who specializes in treating disorders of the retina and vitreous (the thick transparent substance that fills the center of the eye). His expertise includes conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, ocular trauma, retinal detachment, retinal vascular diseases and uveitis (swelling of the uvea, the middle layer of the eye).

In his research, Stewart studies diabetic retinopathy, drug delivery to the eye, and the permeability and biomechanics of eye tissues.

Stewart earned his medical degree at Harvard Medical School and completed a residency in ophthalmology at UCSF. He completed a fellowship at the Doheny Eye Institute and won the vitreoretinal surgery award from the Ronald G. Michels Fellowship Foundation, which funds outstanding young scholars.

Stewart is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists and Retina Society.

    Dr Jay Stewart s the best so good in fact I recommended him that day to a patient who had seen another eye specialist and was actually crying in the hallway because of the way he was treated and the last of information he was given. I told him if he got an appointment with Dr. Stewart he'd have a totally different experience!

    Consistently for years now Jay Stewart MD has provided me with care and education and professional expertise that is beyond the above scales - #6 and excellent is closer to reality. The care with which he reviewed my images with me to make sense of knowledge I don't have was exemplary. I love that he is training the next generation(s) of opthamologists. I am so grateful.

    Jay Stewart MD is a competent and skilled physician a clear communicator and educator (shares information explained imaging answers questions). This was my first urgent visit scheduled for symptoms and the above was still all true. The fellow who examined me before Dr Stewart was also excellent - kind communicated well and did a super thorough exam ( when I thanked and appreciated his communication he smiled and said - "it really helps if you like what what you do". So - thanks to him ( I'm sorry I do t remember his name) and what better evidence of department leadership and mentorship that the fellow is also so excellent.

    My only suggestion is that patients be told to be prepared to not drive home due to eye drops and pupil dilation. My drive home by myself was stressful.

    First of all I'm so grateful to the entire awesome team which has perfectly helped me out to accomplish this medical visit with wonderful experiences.Particularly I heartily and greatly appreciate Dr. Stewart for his amazingly kind care and exceptionally professional authorities. After Dr. Stewart pinpointed and clearly explained my vision problems and concerns I finally can let the 3-year-long worry and anxiety go. Besides I also learned what the related symptoms needed to watch and the cautious actions needed to take in the future.It's indeed impressive and admirable of you all.     Dr Jay Stewart who I have now seen for years is the consummate professional. I am delighted that he is teaching the next generation. I appreciate his clinical judgment his teaching his ability to discern the level at which I can understand my findings.
