The UCSF Center for Aortic Disease cares for patients with conditions involving the aorta, the large artery that carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the rest of the body. These conditions include aneurysms (weakness in the artery wall that leads to a bulge), tears and blockages.

Our team includes vascular and cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, radiologists, rheumatologists and geneticists. Together, we provide the full range of services, from the most advanced treatment techniques to monitoring and long-term follow-up care.

Our surgeons have expertise in both traditional and minimally invasive procedures, including endovascular techniques, in which the aorta is reached through a small incision near the hip. Our team has pioneered endovascular repair of aortic aneurysms using stent grafts, which are tubes made of metal mesh and fabric that reinforce the artery wall.

UCSF is the only medical center in California that can treat certain complex aneurysms using branched stent grafts, which have branched limbs that deliver blood flow directly to the organs that need it. This experimental technique is available at UCSF through a clinical trial.

    Key treatments

    Conventional Aneurysm Surgery

    If you have an aneurysm, your doctor may recommend conventional "open surgical repair." In open surgery, the aneurysm is exposed through a long incision.

    Endovascular Surgery

    UCSF Medical Center is a pioneer in endovascular surgery, performing more than 150 endovascular aneurysm repairs annually. Find more treatment information here.
