Dr. Jose G. Gurrola II is an otolaryngologist who specializes in rhinology, or conditions of the nose and sinuses, as well as frontal skull base surgery.

Gurrola's research interests include the causes and treatments of chronic sinusitis. He is also interested in approaches to and outcomes in skull base surgery.

Gurrola received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in otolaryngology at University of Iowa Health Care, followed by a fellowship in rhinology and skull base surgery at Georgia Regents University, now Augusta University.

Before coming to UCSF, Gurrola was an assistant professor of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery at the University of Virginia.

Gurrola is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, American Rhinologic Society and North American Skull Base Society. He also serves on committees for these associations.

    I was concerned and disappointed my doctor had not read my medical records that were sent by my previous doctor. He said something about the records not being uploaded even though they were sent months ago. I feel it's important to know my health history and treatments I've had in order to move forward. I was very surprised and disappointed my records were not available and hadn't been reviewed.

    The best in all categories. Listening addressing and providing information for every question I asked. I was given the most valuable gift of time and expertise as the conditions options and details of treatments were explained. The instructions were provided in a professional friendly and respectful manner. Supported by a print out of at home treatment and future appointment details. With the internet source for the UCSF Smell Therapy Kit I was able to order it today and feel well prepared. The care is stellar and I would recommend you to everyone.

    Providers were quick to recommend invasive treatment without quite enough scaffolding given the broader norms of elective surgery. It would have been easier to hear something like "for this condition it happens that there is a low-risk highly effective surgical option in contrast to the many other elective surgeries for which we advise lots of caution and waiting until the condition gets worse". I also had to push them to learn about the likely path of recovery. But they were very clear about the approach and its likely long-term effects.
